Penchant for Tagore songs
Tapan Mahmud: Absorbed in a world of his own

Tapan Mahmud has been performing Tagore songs since 1969. He is the Secretary of Bangladesh Rabindra Sangeet Shilpi Shangstha and heads an organisation named Baitalik, teaching Tagore songs.

This eminent singer says that since very early days Tagore songs have held its uniqueness for the melody it carries. Even today the new generation, along with its craze for band music, love to listen to the melodious songs of the yesteryears. Great singers like Chinmoy Chattopadhaya, Konika Banerjee, Sagarmoy Ghosh and others are still the favourites.

According to Tapan, the singers of Tagore songs today are very talented in the sense that they have to compete with a wider range of music, at a time when modern songs are gaining popularity day by day.

The emergence of young singers of trendy modern songs could not in any way outshine the popularity of singers like Papya Sarwar, Rezwana Chawdhury Bannya, Sadi Mohammad or Mita Haque.

He says, "After the Liberation War, changes were seen in the social and cultural fields, and the scope of singing and practicing increased. People started to learn and teach Tagore songs with more perfection, quality and care. That is why, the popularity for this music increased with time."

According to Tapan, Sadi Mohammad, Rezwana Chowdhury Bannya and many others like them should be considered as Ustads. Since most of them have had their institutional lessons from Shantiniketan, they are able to teach the upcoming artistes with accuracy. The practice is quite satisfying and encouraging.

Finally, he starts off enthusiastically about his organisation, Baitalik. It was established in 1970 and was just a music school then. Gradually by 1977 it developed into a dance drama group. Famous dance artiste Laila Hassan was also involved with this group, he said. Now the organisation is only Tagore based and annual performances are held here.

Tapan says that he used to sing from a very young age, which gave him hardly any scope to even think of any other genre of music. Today he feels honoured to be a singer of Tagore songs.
