'Killer' Abbas gets life in arms case

The Speedy Trial Tribunal-3, Dhaka Division, yesterday jailed 'Killer' Abbas, one of the top 23 listed criminals of Dhaka city, for life for possessing illegal firearms and ammunition.The tribunal also fined the convict Tk 50,000, and, he will serve two more years in jail if he fails to pay the fine. Judge Mohammad Abu Hanif read out the important portion of the 22-page judgement in presence of the convict. The convict can appeal to the High Court (HC) Division against the judgement within 30 days. The Detective Branch of Police arrested 'Killer' Abbas, also an accused in two murder cases, at Helvetia fast food shop in the city's Gulshan area on February 14 this year. They also recovered a foreign revolver and 23 cartridges from his possession. Later, a case was filed with Gulshan Police Station under Section 19(A) and 19(F) of the Arms Act. The investigation officer pressed charges against Abbas on April 13. The court framed charges on June 23 and began trial on July 3. Both the prosecution and defence completed their arguments on Saturday. Earlier, the court recorded statements of 11 out of 15 prosecution witnesses in the case. Special Public Prosecutor Nurul Iman Babul conducted the case on behalf of the state.
