Vajpayee rules out talks with Musharraf at Saarc summit

India's Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee ruled out bilateral talks with Pakistan during his visit to Islamabad early next year for the South Asian Association of regional Cooperation (Saarc) summit but said his peace initiative was still in force.

"Till Pakistan stops cross-border terrorism and dismantles the terrorist infrastructure, there is no proposal for talks. It would not be useful," he told a press conference on Friday wrapping up his week-long visit here to attend the UN General Assembly.

"If Pakistan believes in the peace process, it has to give solid proof about its sincerity by taking action to end cross-border terrorism, dismantles the terrorist infrastruc ture where it is providing training to militants. They are constantly recruiting young people for terrorist training," Vajpayee said.

He said that during his meeting with President Bush, the US leader acknowledged that cross-border terrorism has increased and that it should be stopped.

Asked whether it was fair to assume that his peace initiative started in Srinagar in April has ended in New York with the slinging match, the prime minister said "whatever has happened is not right and should not have happened. I do not think the peace initiative is over, it should continue".

Vajpayee rejected a suggestion that continuing the peace process was a sign of India's weakness.
