6th Men's Asia Cup KL 2003
Four more for BD

Tiny Hong Kong put the final nail in Bangladesh's coffin in the 6th Men's Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The former British colony recorded a goalfest 4-3 win over Abdur Razzak Sona Mia's unimaginative side that turned out to the whipping boys of the championship.

The defeat consigned Bangla-desh to last place in the eight-team regional extravaganza, which is the stepping stone to World Cup qualification.

The only solace for Bangladesh was that they finally ended their scoring drought after conceding 31 goals in their first four games.

Forward Ariful Haque Prince scored Bangladesh's first goal in the meet after three minutes of play.

But it was Hong Kong who led the first half 2-1 with Faruque equalizing in the 14th minute and Arif Ali adding the second after seven minutes.

Isa Mia brought Bangladesh back to life with a double strikes in the 50th and 55th minute.

But the knockout blow came in the 67th minute when Arif scored his second to seal Bangladesh's fate in the 7th-8th classification match.

The defeat completed a miserable chapter in Bangladesh hockey. Before leaving for the Malaysian capital, the team declared that they were going to beat China and secure the all-important sixth place for an entry into the World Cup qualifiers.

But at the end they were dumped in the South China Sea after giving away 35 goals.

They lost the group league opener against finalist Pakistan 8-0 then gulped 10 against fellow finalist India. Their China mission ended in a no-contest as the rapidly improving Chinese slammed another eight goals.

Bangladesh's agony did not end there as the home side Malaysia gave them a five-goal treatment.

The battered and bruised Bangladesh hockey team will fly home this evening. One wonders what kind of reception awaits Sona Mia's men.
