Misappropriation of Tk 47,000
One gets 22 years


A former union parishad (UP) chairman has been sentenced to 22 years' imprisonment for misappropriation of Tk 47,000 in 1992-1994.

Mohammad Azizul Haq, judge of the special court for Dhaka Division yesterday gave the verdict in presence of the convict Mohammad Mofazzal Sarker, former chairman of 10 no Bangla Bazar Union Parishad, Munshiganj.

The court also fined Mofazzal Tk 64,000. He will have to serve another five years' imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine.

Both the prosecution and the defence completed their arguments on September 21.

In the case filed with Munshiganj Sadar thana, Mofazzal drew Tk 47,000 from the government fund for the salary of UP members and Chowkidars but he did not pay the salary to them.

Munshiganj district Bureau of Anti-Corruption officer RK Majumder filed a case against Mofazzal on August 30, 1995.

The investigation officer submi-tted a charge sheet against him on August 30, 2000, showing 10 people as prosecution witnesses.

The senior special judge, Munshiganj framed charge against him on June 24, 2001.

The trial began on July 30, the same year. Later, the case was transferred to the special court for Dhaka Division March 23 last year.
