Unprecedented salute indeed!
UNB, Dhaka
Lawyers, court officials and litigants at a metropolitan magistrate's court were surprised when Magistrate Khandker Fatema Begum stood up and saluted Minister for Housing and Public Works Mirza Abbas yesterday as he appeared there as plaintiff of a defamation case."This is unprecedented. She has undermined the image of the judiciary," observed a senior lawyer at the court. Mirza Abbas filed a defamation suit in November last year against the editor, printer-publisher and the owner of daily Jugantor for publication of a report that he deemed libellous. Abbas rushed to the court yesterday after the accused sought for dismissal of the case as the minister failed to appear before the court on five consecutive dates of hearing. The court after hearing both sides framed charges against the accused.
