Verdict on graft case against Ershad today

A Dhaka court delivers today the judgement in the corruption case against former president HM Ershad filed 11 years ago for illegal withdrawal of income tax money.

Mohammad Azizul Haq, judge of the Special Court for Dhaka Division, will pronounce the verdict at 12:30pm, court sources said.

The prosecution and defence completed their arguments on September 21.

Earlier, the court recorded statements of three out of seven prosecution witnesses in the case.

In the case filed with Ramna Police Station it was alleged that Ershad, while in power, paid Tk 7,43,416 as income tax for six years (1983-1989). Later, he withdrew Tk 2,76,324 from the income tax money without submitting any documents in favour of his action.

The Bureau of Anti-corruption filed a corruption case accusing Ershad and three tax officials on July 27, 1992.

The investigation officer of the case submitted the charge sheet against Ershad as the lone accused on December 19 the same year.

The court framed charges against Ershad on January 26, 1994 and the trial began on June 26, 2003.
