Hills people threaten indefinite road blockade

The Jhum Refugee Welfare Association has now threatened to enforce an indefinite road blockade from October 11 if the authorities fail to resume ration distribution within the seven-day ultimatum.

On the concluding day of its three-day road blockade, leaders of the association made the threat of the tougher programme at a rally held in front of the deputy commissioner's office at the end of a procession.

The continual three-day road blockade made public life in the hills district screech to a halt.

The association enforced the blockade on September 26 to press for its 22-point demand including the continuation of ration. The Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity and the United People's Democratic Front supported the association blockade.

Meanwhile, a UPDF leader, Pratya Chakma, alleged in a statement that the government is trying to sweep the Mahalchhari incident under the carpet by not forming a judicial committee to probe it.

The UPDF has called for a one-day road blockade and office boycott in the Mahalchhari thana today.
