Twenty buses vandalised as transport workers clash

At least 20 buses were vandalised in a series of clashes between two groups of transport workers yesterday over the launch of a new bus service.

According to police and witnesses, Eagle Paribahan, owned by a local BNP leader, launched its operation on Simrail-Kalir Bazar route at about 8:00am. Other bus operators were agitating against the drive, they added.

The workers of other bus services attacked and damaged two buses of Eagle at Pathantuli. To avenge the incident, the workers of Eagle also damaged three buses in front of Moonlight cinema hall at Adamjee at about 10:00am.

At least 11 buses of Eagle and nine buses of its rivals were ransacked in Metro Hall, Adamjee, Pathantuli, Godnail areas.

At one stage, the rival groups locked in an armed conflict and fired three bullets.

The district commissioner arranged a meeting between the two groups when police took control of the situation. The service of Eagle has been suspended at the meeting until the district bus transport association takes any decision in this regard.
