A procession of English learners
Our Corerspondent, B'baria
Awed townspeople looked on curiously as about 1600 male and female students, some from primary schools, chanted slogans in English and marched the streets with banners and fastoons, also written in English. More surprise awaited them. The marchers, led by teachers, gathered at a place and held a discussion meeting where all participants spoke in English. Even primary school students tried to speak in English. The programmes, held on Friday, were organised by the 'Serve the Society to Introduce Tomorrow (SSIT) Foundation' to prepare the young generation to cope with the fast-changing world in the age of Internet. The SSIT Foundation has declared Brahmabaria 'a town of English speaking students'. Beginning last year, the SSIT Foundation has by now opened ten English Practice Zones in the town to develop English language of students. The procession, led by Vice-principal of Brahmanbaria Government College Prof Md Mujibar Rahman, started from Abdul Kuddus Makhan Mukta Mancha at Thankerpar at about 3:30 pm. They converged on the premises of the Chasi Bhaban at Shimail Kandi for a discussion meeting. SSIT Foundation Dreictor Md Matin, a ASOKA Fellow, presided over the meeting while Vice-principal of Brahmanbaria Government College Md Mubibur Rahman was the chief guest. The speakers included The Daily Star correspondent Sk Md Shahidul Islam, banker Rafiqul Islam and teachers Porimal Bhawmik and MA Khalek.
