CPA chief asks Saber to talk Hasina into joining meet

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association chief asked a special emissary of the main opposition Awami League (AL) to talk its President Sheikh Hasina into joining the CPA October 4-12 conference in Dhaka, said Speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar yesterday.

"It's an international conference, so the opposition should participate in it," Sircar, president of the 49th conference, quoted CPA Secretary General Denis Marshall as telling Hasina's Political Secretary Saber Hossain Chowdhury in London.

Marshall urged Saber to make Hasina understand the significance of the conference of the largest platform of lawmakers, Sircar told journalists at his Sangsad Bhaban chamber.

The AL sent the special emissary to the CPA headquarters on September 25 to explain its decision on boycott of the conference after Marshall wrote a letter and made phone calls to the leader of the opposition, urging her and her party to take part in the event.

The AL decided to boycott the CPA conference in protest at what it said was the government's arrogant attitude toward the opposition in preparing for the event.

Marshall will meet Hasina after his arrival in Dhaka on October 3 and the CPA pins hopes on the dialogue with the opposition to bring its leaders to the meet, to be joined by 538 delegates from 137 parliaments in 46 countries.

Sircar still wishes the opposition to join the conference and said: "I will remain hopeful of its participation until October 7. All doors are open to the opposition leaders and they can come join anytime."

But the AL rejected Sircar's plea and accused him of playing a biased role in the run-up to the big event.

Opposition Chief Whip Abdus Shahid told newspersons that the decision was final. "He (Sircar) did not initiate any step to end the stalemate, but is now urging the opposition through media."

The schedule of the conference has been finalised with the inclusion of its concluding ceremony, which was decided at the last meeting of the conference steering committee.
