Nooks and corners turned toilets

Visitors to the stadium area cannot but complain about the ammonia-infested odour that prevails in the air during a visit to one of the city's most noteworthy and busy places.

A certain inquisitiveness to look into the matter and the reasons behind 'the street-side urination' are 'the pent-up waste' of the thousands of employees and workers involved around 269 shops of the Bangabandhu stadium, that operate in the area, was inevitable.

These people cannot really be 'fined' either, since they are victims of the availability of the extremely low numbers of public toilets.

The entire stadium has only five public toilets, of which the Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani stadium possesses three. The other two are near the first gate and the swimming pool. The Bangabandhu stadium sadly, has no public toilets of its own.

"Most of the shop owners and employees of the Bangabandhu stadium have to walk a long way and therefore, they usually relieve themselves near the corners of the stadium." said Selim, a twelve year old cell phone cover seller.

The shop owners and employees, in and around the Baitul Mukkaram area, fortunately can run to the mosque's clean bathrooms to answer 'the call of the nature'. But some others, have to pay a price for such relief.

The price for using a public toilet ranges from Tk. 1 for washing the face, to as high as Tk. 6 for 'the ultimate relief'.

"Most of us employees, are usually out of change or have to wait in line. And so, during extenuating circumstances, we feel it easier to use the 'discreet' corners and stairwells of the stadium area," said Sohel, an employee of one of the electronics shop.

Through a veteran, in charge of the new public toilet, this correspondent learnt a lot more about the history of the stadium's public toilet. At first the stadium had eight public toilets, Therefore, the stadium had five public toilets and the Maulana Bhashani hockey stadium had three. But with time, the concerned authority, decided to break down three of them.

Of these three public toilets, one was moved near the ticket counters at gate # 2 in January this year. The new public toilet is twice as big as the other four and it is being used quite frequently.

Next to this, anyone would be able to notice another public toilet, locked up for future inauguration.

When asked, the person in charge of the nearby toilet said, "It would be opened hopefully by next January, when the new tenders would finally be passed."

As is the demand of the most members of the common public, the stadium area requires at least, three more public toilets. Hopefully, the concerned authority would take heed of this massive plea that emanates from the hearts of the millions walking and working in the area, almost twice every single day.
