24 of 28 docs shunted out for absence
DG health surprised at surprise visit to NICVD

Barely a week after a World Bank report said 74 per cent doctors do not attend duty, the director general (DG) of the health directorate in a surprise visit to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) yesterday found 24 of 28 on-duty doctors absent.

DG Mizanur Rahman went to the hospital and stayed there between 8:00am and 9:00am. To his utter exasperation, he found the doctors absent.

The DG then informed Health Minister Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain of the disorder and the minister asked him to take immediate actions.

A few hours later, the 24 doctors were transferred to different districts as punishment.

According to sources, the DG is learnt to have made such surprise visits to some more hospitals.

Another 25 doctors of various districts were also transferred yesterday for neglect of duty.

Although the health directorate had contested the World Bank report, it took the report quite seriously, sources said.

There were a number of meetings on the report and the decision to make the surprise visit was taken.
