UEFA Champs League
Nedved inspires Juve

Two touches of brilliance from Pavel Nedved lifted Juventus to a 2-1 win over Olympiakos in a European Champions League Group D match here on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old Czech international was grounded due to suspension for last season's final at Old Trafford which Juventus lost to AC Milan on penalties but he sure made his presence felt here in no uncertain terms.

Olympiakos were quick off the mark, going ahead in the 11th minute but Nedved quickly had the Italians back level with a sweetly struck free kick, before conjuring up the decider ten minutes from time.

Olympiakos deservedly went ahead when a free kick from the right taken by French World Cup winner Christian Karembeu fell to Ieroklis Stoltidis, the Greek's header sailing over Juve 'keeper Gianluigi Buffon.

The home team then had a gilt-edged chance to inflict further pain on a Juventus side missing the influential but injured Alessandro Del Piero but with only Buffon to beat their Brazilian striker Giovanni miscued over the crossbar.

They were rueing that miss a minute later when a foul by Stoltidis resulted in a direct free kick from 25 metres and up stepped Nedved to make no mistake leaving Olympiakos keeper Theofanis Katergiannakis all at sea.

With half time looming David Trezeguet had the ball in the back of the Olympiakos net but his effort was discounted for offside.

The French international was in the thick of things again just after the break but he narrowly failed to connect with a neat Nedved pass across the goalmouth.

Juventus coach Marcello Lippi made his first change with over half an hour to go, bringing on Fabrizio Miccoli to replace fellow forward Marco Di Vaio.

His counterpart on the Olympiakos bench Oleg Protassov also altered the shape of his side, swopping defender Dimitros Mavrogenidis and Giovanni for two midfielders - Panagiotis Gonias and Giorgios Georgiadis.

Gonias was barely on the pitch when he picked up a yellow card for a two footed challenge on Miccoli, the second booking for the Greeks after Castillo was caught for a first half foul on Edgar Davids.

The Uruguayan's game ended prematurely when he went down with cramp and had to be replaced by Alexandros Tatsis.

As the game headed for a stalemate Nedved struck for the second time, his shot from outside the box swerving out of Katergiannakis' reach.

The result left Juventus leading Group D and set fair for the knockout stage while Olympiakos foot the table.
