Road accident death triggers massive protests in Ctg

Death of a labourer in a road accident triggered massive protests by his fellow workers, disrupting traffic movement and other activities in the busy commercial area of Mazhirghat in the port city yesterday.Traffic and other activities came to a halt for about four hours as agitated workers of the nearby salt factories and godowns of cement and fertiliser put up a barricade and marched in a procession carrying the body of the victim, witnesses said. The victim identified as Mamun, 18, was a day-labourer. According to sources, a speeding truck ran over Mamun at Strand Road in Majhirghat-Bangla Bazar area at around 1.30pm. Soon after the accident, the workers put up a barricade, causing the area to be gridlocked. They also forced the owners of the business establishments in the area to keep the shutters down. Police seized the truck but the driver managed to flee away. A case was filed with Double Mooring police.
