CU Academic Council report by October 12
Teachers want revise of grading system, Shibir opposes
Cu Correspondent
Most of the teachers at Tuesday's Academic Council meeting at Chittagong University (CU) favoured "revision" of the newly introduced grading system in examination, meeting sources said. However, a few pro-Jamat-e-Islami teachers of science faculty strongly opposed it and demanded revival of the old 'class system'. They were not more than six, the sources said. The meeting was held at the Vice-chancellor's (VC) office from 10:30am to 2pm. The meeting formed a seven-member committee headed by VC AJM Nuruddin Chowdhury and asked it to submit a report on the proposed revision of the grading system by October 12. Other members of the committee are pro-Vice Chancellor Prof M Shamsuddin and deans of five faculties. The Syndicate will take a final decision as per recommendation of the report. When contacted Prof Shamsuddin said a decision will be taken next month. The committee has been asked to prepare a report on revision of the grading system as per opinion of most of the teachers, he said. Meanwhile, the third day of the indefinite 'siege' of the campus by students allegedly backed by Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) on Tuesday passed off peacefully. They enforced the 'siege' demanding cancellation of grading system and revival of the 'class system' in evaluating answer scripts. Classes were not held due to poor presence of students. Meanwhile a 15-day Puja vacation began yesterday. Examinations remained suspended since August 20 because of student agitation from August 11 demanding for revival of the old class system. This will increase the session jam by about one year. Most of the departments are now facing two to three year's session jam, Ali Asgar Chowdhury, chairman of Journalism department said. At least 600 examinations have so far been postponed in 33 departments and two institutes of the university. The decision on examination system has to be approved by the university Syndicate but its meeting has not yet been scheduled. Earlier, deans of all faculties submitted separate recommendations to the vice chancellor with proposals to overcome the present crisis. In the proposals, they recommended another chance for the student who will get C minus, C plus and B minus for improvement examination. Earlier, only those who got F grade could appear for improvement examination. The agitating students said, Chittagong University's grade point 3 to 3.5 was considered equivalent to first class mark obtained in class system in other universities. So they could not compete for jobs, they said.
