2 bullet-hit as cops open fire at muggers

Two persons suffered bullet injuries when police opened fire during a mugging attempt at Banianagar in Sutrapur yesterday.

A team of Sutrapur police chased four near Banianagar Jame Mosque at about 5:30am as they attempted to snatch money from a rickshaw passenger. At one point, Sub-Inspector Tajul Islam fired from his shotgun injuring Mohammad Mintu, an alleged snatcher and Mintu Mia, a pedestrian. Police seized a knife and three cocktails from Mohammad Mintu.

They were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Three cases were filed with Sutrapur Police Station.

In another incident, Hossain Ali, a day labourer of Shyambazar Kitchen Market, suffered head injury at English Road in old Dhaka yesterday when alleged snatchers hurled bombs while fleeing.

A rickshaw passenger raised alarm as a gang tried to mug him at about 8:00am. Chased by locals, the gang hurled several hand-bombs to escape and one hit Ali, sources said.
