The state of our education
Tamim-Yusuf, A F Rahman Hall, DU
As the very first year of the "International Literacy Decade" (2003-2012) we, the general folk and the government, should play a significant role collectively to eradicate illiteracy and make literacy our freedom. Literacy figure of Bangladesh shows that, of the total people, only 41.4 per cent people are literate. Especially in the rural area, and in the urban slum, the number is even worse. Though our government runs various institutions including the "Total Literacy Movement" (TLM), the public academies and the NGOs, as well as the civil society should work collectively. The figure of "Education-Watch' also shows that the females are lagged 12 percentage points behind the males. The difference between urban and rural literacy, 63.6 and 37.2 per cent, reveals a wide gap. The people of Bangladesh are divided into four categories. Non-literate, semi-literate, literate at the initial level and literate at the advanced level. Education Watch 2002 produced some findings in its latest report. And, thanks to The Daily Star, and especially to Fazle Hasan Abed and Samir Nath, for illuminating the same problem. After all, all the people should come forward to make the decade a pragmatic one and develop a strong socio-economic foundation for the nation.
