Hundreds homeless in Siberian quake

An earthquake struck Russia's Altai mountains in southern Siberia yesterday -- the third major tremor in less than a week -- destroying buildings, triggering landslides and leaving 1,800 villagers homeless.

A statement from the regional government said the latest tremor, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, had struck remote villages near the Mongolian border just after 8am (localtime).

Residents of the mountainous region which also borders China and Kazakhstan said they felt exposed by the worst quake in decades, but rescue efforts were slow to get under way.
