Baishakhy, Roy clinch crowns


Shifat Nusrat Baishakhy and Amal Roy lifted the women's and men's singles crowns on the final day of the Philips National Tennis Tournament yesterday.

At the Ramna National Tennis Complex, Baishakhy maintained her supremacy in the local women's game with an easy 6-3, 6-0 win against BKSP's Ishrat Sultana. She also added the doubles title to her collection after teaming up with Shathi Sarkar to earn a hard-fought 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 over Ishrat and Mushfiqa.

Roy breezed past veteran Hira Lal 6-3, 6-2. But Lal later returned to capture the men's doubles with Dilip Pasia.

Meanwhile, in other results Omar Faruque of Rajshahi won the boys' under-13 title with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Rabi of BKSP while Ranjan Ram won the boys' under-16 event defeating Yousuf Aman 7-5, 6-3.

Kibria Ayeda won the girls' under-16 singles category with a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of Sadiya Hossain.

Later State Minister for Power Iqbal Hasan Mahmud distributed prizes among the winners.
