2 young women commit suicide

An HSC examinee and a domestic help allegedly committed suicide at Mugda and Azimpur in the city yesterday.

Eighteen-year-old Tania Akhter, daughter of Zamir Hossain of 1/59, south Mugda, was a student of Motijheel Model School and College.

Sadeq, Tania's brother, said she went out of their residence on Thursday morning to meet her friend and attend the computer class. She returned home at 8.00pm.

"We heard a groaning sound coming out of her room at around 11.00pm and found her hanging from the ceiling fan with a saree," said he.

Tania was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where she died early yesterday.

Domestic help Rehana Akhter, 19, also took her life by hanging herself from the ceiling fan at 6.20am at her uncle-cum-master's house at 165/A, New Paltan residential area.

The incident took place in less than 12 hours of her uncle, Abdul Majid's marriage on Thursday.

One young woman took Rehana to the DMCH and introduced herself as Marium and Rehana as Mousumi of Kamrangirchar.

Doctors-on-duty declared Rehana dead.

Sources said Rehana had been working for Majid, owner of a crockery shop at New Market, for the last two years.

Reasons behind the two incidents could not be known immediately.
