Damage of image of Durga
Govt inaction encourages miscreants, says LDF

The 11-party central steering committee yesterday said the BNP-Jamaat coalition government's appeasement policy towards communal elements and criminals encourages miscreants to damage image of Durga at different puja mandaps.

At a meeting with CPB president Manzurul Ahsan Khan in the chair, the Left Democratic Alliance (LDF) asked the government to arrest those involved in breaking Durga images and ensure a peaceful and festive atmosphere for celebration of the `Saradia Durga Puja'.

The alliance condemned the police baton charge on schoolteachers and urged the government to meet the "reasonable demands" of the teachers.

It expressed indignation at the US ambassador's continued "interference in the country's internal affairs" and drew the government's attention about it.

The meeting was attended by 11-party coordinator Rashed Khan Menon, Ganatantri Party President Azizul Islam Khan, BSD leader Shruvangshu Chakraborty, CPB General Secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim, Gono Forum General Secretary Saifuddin Ahmed Manik, Workers Party General Secretary Bimal Biswas, Gano Azadi League President Alhaj Abdus Samad, Hossain Ali of Communist Kendra and Abu Hamed Shahabuddin of Samyabadi Dal.
