PM to lay foundation of Mohra Water Supply Project Oct 6

The prolonged water crisis of the people of port city is expected to be over to a great extent with the completion of Mohra Water Supply Project (MWSP) undertaken by the Chittagong Water and Sewerage Authority (CWASA).

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is expected to lay the foundation of the about Tk 200 crore project, located on the outskirts of the city on October 6.

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan and Commerce Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury are scheduled to attend the inaugural function.

The total estimated cost of the project is Tk 197.69 crore and will be financed by the government. The completion of the project would raise CWASA supply capacity by another 9 crore litre of water per day which will be more than 50 per cent of its existing capacity, sources said.

The project is expected to be implemented by 2007.

During the long journey of the CWASA since 1963, the utility at present can supply only 17 crore litre water against the daily requirement of 50 crore litre.

Of the total supply, the CWASA is getting nine crore litre through Mohra Water Treatment Plant as being the only source of surface water while the rest is collected from underground sources by deep tubewells.

The MWSP is a priority project of the CWASA, which is in effect an expansion of the existing Mohra Water Treatment Plant (MWTP).
