Asian Under-17 C'ships
Bangladesh in finals

A second half goal from Hirak Joarder against Kyrgyzstan took Bangladesh to the final round of the Asian Under-17 championships yesterday.

The 1-0 result over the central Asian opponents in their second leg match of the qualifiers at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium yesterday evening gave Bangladesh a 3-0 aggregate victory. The home side won the first leg encounter 2-0 at the same venue on Saturday.

Joardar headed home from a Monu corner in the 72nd minute. The team will now play in the finals in Japan next year.

Bangladesh, needing only a draw yesterday, made a shaky start against the visitors who dominated the first half and created three scoring chances.

In the 18th minute, Kyrgyzstan's Karimjan came close to scoring when he shot from right side. But Bangladesh custodian Rahatul Kabir fisted the ball away.

The tourists got two more chances in the first session to go up but poor marksmanship kept them at bay.

27 minutes into the second half, Bangladesh were rewarded for their patience with Joardar's goal.

Despite the qualification Bangladesh's coach Shahidur Rahman Chowdhury Shantoo was not satisfied with the overall performance of the team.

"Although they made some good movements, they still failed to play according to the plan," said Shantoo who had been training the squad for two months.

"We need more training with a long term plan so that we can play better when we go to Japan next year," added Shantoo.
