President of Supreme Court Bar Association Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud yesterday named Syed Shahidur Rahman as the judge to have allegedly taken money from a person for fixing bail.Rokanuddin in a letter to Chief Justice (CJ) KM Hasan yesterday disclosed the name of the judge and the evidence he has against the judge. He met the CJ at his residence after Hasan asked him on October 6 to garnish facts about his allegations. Shahidur applied for a two-month leave yesterday. "My letter contains the name of Additional Judge Syed Shahidur Rahman and details of his corruption," Rokanuddin told journalists at his chamber at the Supreme Court but refused to elaborate on the content of the letter. "This judge, appointed on April 24, was rumoured to be a corrupt person. He should not be allowed to sit in the court after his name has been revealed. Lawyers have been aggrieved and I am embarrassed to move any petition in his court," Rokanuddin said. "I would expect that he would not be allowed to the judges' and lawyers' reception when the Supreme Court reopens on October 18 after vacation." "I would also expect that not only would he be removed, but his other offences be looked into as well." "If he resigns, the Bar Council should also cancel his licence as lawyer," he said. "He also has to return the money he received from the person for fixing bail since it is tantamount to fraud." "Such elements have desacralised the court," he went on. Rokanuddin at a meeting of the Bar Association on October 1 alleged that Judge Shahidur reportedly received Tk 50,000 from a client for fixing a bail from the court of a judge friend in a woman repression case. Rokanuddin also said the client then paid the amount and a petition was moved on August 25 in the bench of Justice Nazmun Ara and Justice MA Hafiz. But the bail was rejected. The CJ summoned the judge Tuesday and asked him to give his side of the story about the allegation.
