JU teachers go on strike demanding VC's removal

The Jahangirnagar University Teachers' Association (Juta) on Tuesday decided to indefinitely boycott all classes and examinations of the university to press their two-point demand including removal of the JU vice-chancellor (VC).

The other Juta demand is punishment to Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists who confined the provost and house tutors of Shaheed Salam Barkat Hall on August 11.

The decision to enforce the strike, effective from yesterday, was taken at a general meeting on campus chaired by Juta President Prof Amin Mohammad Ali. Some 80 JU teachers attended the meeting.

"We are demanding the VC's removal because he reneged on his promise to hold the VC panel election and also turned down our request for the election. The situation has compelled us to go for the boycott," said Prof Ali.

Juta also decided to boycott all administrative activities for an indefinite period until their demand is met.

The meeting also demanded immediate solution to the water crisis that has dogged the university for over three weeks.

Syndicate and Finance committee meetings have, however, been kept out of the purview of the strike.

The VC was not available for comment.
