Some Indian states favour river project
Pallab Bhattacharya, New Delhi
New Delhi has claimed several Indian states favour the multibi-llion-dollar project for linking rivers across the country.Additional Water Resources Secretary Radha Singh told reporters here Tuesday evening that Suresh Prabhu, head of the Task Force on Inter Linking of Rivers, had met chief ministers of a good number of states recently and they had come out with a positive response to the project. Singh said the project was found feasible and talks would be held with Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan on it. Among the chief ministers who are reported to have favoured the project include those of West Bengal and Assam. Singh said while Nepal and Bhutan have understood the benefits of the project, Bangladesh had appreciated that its opposition was uncalled for as the scheme was still at the conceptual stage. Singh was speaking to reporters after a daylong "First National Media Summit on Inter Linking of Rivers: Perspectives and Chall-enges." Addressing the seminar, Prabhu said a humanitarian rehabilitation programme would be drawn up for those who would be displaced by the project.
