8-hr hartal in Sylhet today

The Arpita Sampatti Ain Pratirodh Andolan (vested property law resistance movement) called an 8-hour hartal today in Sylhet division to press home its demand.

The programme was announced at a meeting on September 30 by the Andolan, which has been agitating for repeal of the vested property law for the last 4 months.

A rally headed by city Mayor and city Awami League President Badar Ahmed Kamran was held yesterday at the central Shahid Minar with a call to make the hartal a success.

The Andolan was formed after a part of the historic Singha Bari was leased out to an influential group 4 months back.

Govinda Narayan Singha Majumder was the owner of the Singha Bari. Dignitaries like Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam and others had paid visits to the house, which is a property presently worth about Tk 4 crore in the city's Chouhatta area.
