DU Mourning Day

Dhaka University yesterday observed Mourning Day with due solemnity remembering the tragic death of 39 students, employees and guests who were killed in a building collapse at Jagannath Hall on this day in 1985.The day's programme began in the morning with hoisting varsity flags at half-mast. Black flags were also hoisted atop of all the dormitories and administrative buildings of the university. Teachers, students, officials and employees led by Vice Chancellor Prof SMA Faiz in a mourning procession from the foot of the Aparajeyo Bangla went to the Jagannath Hall at 6:30am. Later, they placed wreaths at the monument of the hall. Different socio-political organisations including, Dhaka University Teachers Association, Bangladesh Chhatra League, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Bangladesh Students' Union, Loknath Seba Sangha, Bibekananda Shikkha Parishad, Pahari Chhatra Parishad and Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad also placed wreaths at the monument.
