Robbers kill bus driver, criminal shot dead

Unidentified criminals gunned down a top criminal of Demra and robbers stabbed the driver of a Dhaka-bound bus at Daudkandi yesterday who died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Nine robbers in guise of passengers got on a Dhaka-bound bus, Al Abbas, at Lakkhipur at 9:00pm Saturday. After the bus carrying 52 passengers reached Doel turning near Daudkandi bridge at 2:30am yesterday, a passenger with a 9-year-old boy requested a drop. "As the bus helper opened the door, eight to nine passengers rushed towards bus driver Mainuddin Abu, 40," said a passenger of the bus, Abul Khayer. "They tried to drag him out and stabbed him in the head and waist." As the passengers rushed to the driver's aid, the robbers brought out scissors and swooped on them, injuring five. "The robbers took away cash and valuables from the passengers worth about Tk 5 lakh," said Khayer who also lost Tk 27,000 to the robbers. One robber drove the bus to a fuel station and got off. The bus helper drove the bus to Sayedabad and took the driver and Khayer to the DMCH at 4:00am where he died. In the other incident, Sujit Kumar Das Tulu, an alleged criminal was gunned down by his rivals. Tulu went out of his house at 55, Kutubkhali in Demra at 9:00am after someone called him by mobile phone. "Seconds after Tulu reached Kutubkhali Rasulpur at around 9:30am, the gunmen opened fire on him," the duty officer of the Demra Police Station said. He died on the spot. Tulu, 35, had eight cases of murder, extortion and possession of illegal firearms against him. Police believe rival criminals killed Tulu. Locals said he might be killed for his alleged involvement in the killing of two local businessmen Zakir Hossain, Kaiyum and their bodyguard.
