Accused in monk murder case killed


An accused in the Buddhist monk Gyanojyoti murder case was stabbed to death by a mob at Raozan yesterday afternoon.

Gias Uddin alias Gias, 23, was the second-in-command of a gang known as Jane Alam Bahini of Raozan and an accused in over one dozen cases, including the Buddhist monk murder. He hailed from Harishpal in Raozan upazila.

Sources said Gias along with six other accomplices went to extort tolls at Fakir Takia in Purba Raozan municipal area when they came under attack by local people at around 5:00pm.

The mob surrounded them from all sides and caught Gias and one of his accomplices, Mohoram Ali.

Gias was killed on the spot as the mob attacked him with sharp weapons.

His accomplice Mohoram was also critically injured in the attack, sources said.

Buddhist monk Gyanojyoti Mohathero was murdered in his bedroom inside the monastery of Owanra Puiyan Bhuddha Bihar (a temple cum orphanage) at Hingala in Raozan on the night of April 21 last year.

The Criminal Investigatiion Department (CID), Chittagong, pressed charges against eight persons including Gias in the sensational murder case a few months back.
