2 cops roughed up over toll demand

Two police constables were beaten up by a mob allegedly for demanding toll at a restaurant in the port city yesterday.Later, a police patrol along with the two constables Ranjit Kanti Nath and Imam Uddin raided the hotel and nabbed a boy of the restaurant, Ripon. According to witnesses and other sources, the two constables came to the restaurant -- Bhat Ghar at Naju Mia Lane of Bakshirhat under Kotoali thana-- at around 4:00pm. They demanded toll and threatened the hotel staff that they would be picked up if they did not pay. The employees and others beat up the cops, who then sought help from the police patrol nearby. However, police claimed that constable Ranjit went to the restaurant to have a glass of water but the restaurant staff beat him and also his companion Imamuddin as it was Ramadan fasting time. The restaurant boy was nabbed for 'attacking them', police said.
