Four law-enforcers held on mugging charge

Four law-enforcers from Khilgaon Police Station were arrested on charge of mugging Tk 2 lakh from businessmen at Goran yesterday and a top official said preliminary evidence linked them to the crime.

The arrestees are police sub-inspector (SI) Shamsul Kabir, constables Helal and Azhar and Ansar Azad.

SI Shajahan Sabuj and constable Habib, who allegedly teamed up with the group, were at large.

Mahbubur Rahman Sentu said he along with co-traders Montu Mridha and Mohammad Harun of east Aganagar in Keraniganj went to Goran to meet Delwar Hossain to buy garments.

"We were resting at Delwar's house after jumma prayers when he told us he was going to Qaiyum garments to purchase goods for us," he said.

"Soon after Delwar went out, a police team led by SIs Sahmsul Kabir and Shajahan Sabuj barged into the house and challenged us," Sentu alleged.

"The policemen shouted at us, frisked our bodies and took away Tk 2 lakh we carried for the purchase," he said.

He said SI Kabir ordered his men to arrest them and the policemen dragged them onto the pickup van.

"They left us 200 yards away, asking us to leave the area quickly and quietly. "Don't look around, leave the area immediately without a word for your own safety," Sentu quoted Shamsul as saying.

Unnerved by the action of law-enforcers, the three businessmen broke their story to locals and sought their help to recover the cash.

Jamilur Rahman Nayon, Khilgaon unit chief of Jubo Dal, the youth front of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led the trio towards the police station.

As they reached near Nishi rent-a-car, closer to the police station, they found some members of the police team who raided Delwar's house.

Locals rushed to the scene on hearing exchange of the 'angry shouts' between the policemen and the victims.

Understanding the cause of the trouble, they caught the policemen, recovered Tk 1.46 lakh from them and handed them over to Arman Ali, officer-in-charge of Khilgaon Police Station.

"A police team has gone to Shajahan's house to arrest him," the OC told journalists last night.

"We've found evidence of their involvement with the mugging as they were caught with the money," Majedul Haq, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's east zone, told The Daily Star.

Hundreds of locals and businessmen from Taltala market crowded the police station premises and demanded punishment to the guilty.

Top police officials also went there to tackle the situation.

A case was filed.
