BB asks unions to shift offices to annexe

Bangladesh Bank (BB) authorities yesterday ordered relocation of four employees' union offices from the bank's main building to its 26-storey annexe in 48 hours.

The unions had earlier been asked to shift their offices there, but unbending union activists defied the order.

The central bank took a set of stringent steps, including firing of 10 employees for violation of its service rule, in the wake of last week's chaos at the governor's office.

The union offices include one of the Collective Bargaining Agents (CBA) who led over 300 staff to lay siege to the governor's office on Tuesday.

Some of the CBA activists stormed the governor's room demanding promotion and engaged in vandalism.

The union offices, located on the executive floor where the bank's top officials work, are sources of noise, BB officials said.

Union activists used to hold meetings in the boardroom, earmarked for high officials, and meet top executives without any appointment.

Meanwhile, police yesterday grilled some employees and officials in connection with last week's incident.

Police said they would submit a charge sheet in the case soon.

Sixty-six new assistant directors, whose appointments were virtually blocked by the CBA moment, joined the central bank yesterday. The BB issued letters to 100 selected people who sat for the recruitment test two years ago.

The union leaders demanded their promotion before any fresh recruitment.

Leaders of the CBA, backed by the coalition leader Bangladesh Nationalist Party, continued to lobby with influential political leaders and Bank Employees Federation yesterday to 'fight out' the central bank's 'decision to oust' unruly unionists and streamline their activities.

CBA sources said they were planning legal battles with the BB.
