Clash over erratic train halt leaves 15 hurt

Passengers, railway staff and villagers yesterday locked in a clash over an irregular halt of Chittagong-bound Meghna Express at the Sitakunda Station.

The 20-minute clash left at least 15 people, mostly hailing from Barisal and Bhola, injured. They were undergoing treatment at different city clinics, sources said.

Witnesses said the flare up occurred at around 9:30am when the train from Chandpur remained stopped at the station for about 40 minutes allegedly to give passage to the Dhaka Mail.

Some passengers of the Meghna Express went to the stationmaster's room to inquire about the delay where an altercation with the staff started.

A local person circulated the matter over his cell phone to others in the locality, who rushed to the station with sticks and attacked the passengers.

Injured passengers Amirul Haq, Amir Hossain and Mohammad Tanvir alleged that they lost their money and other valuables during the clash.

Police came in and brought the situation under control.

A case was filed with Government Railway Police.
