JU meet ends in failure

A meeting between the Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities and the executive committee of JU Teachers' Association (JUTA) yesterday failed to resolve the deadlock in academic and administrative activities on the campus.

The meeting turned into a failure when the JU authorities refused to announce a fixed timetable for VC panel election.

At the meeting, JUTA submitted a statement mentioning their various demands.

It also called for removal of the vice-chancellor before the VC panel election to make it free and fair, but the authorities rejected the proposal saying it is unnecessary.

Regarding the demand for punishment to the JCD cadres responsible for SSB Hall incident, the authorities said the matter is under investigation and action will be taken on the basis of the probe report.

JUTA delegation came out of the meeting just 15 minutes after its beginning.

JUTA Secretary Prof Nasir Uddin said, "We did not believe in their assurances as they broke them thrice earlier. This was nothing but cutting joke with us in the name of meeting."

Pro-VC Prof Enamul Haq Khan said election to VC panel could be held in December.

"We requested them to postpone their movement till then. But they did not listen to us. To set a specific time-table for VC panel election is not possible now," he added.

VC Prof Jasim Uddin Ahmad, two Pro-VCs, treasurer and11 members of the JUTA executive committee attended the meeting.

Earlier, JUTA held a meeting at the council room of the administrative building after receiving a letter from the university authorities on October 30 in which they expressed their willingness to talk over the demands of JUTA including the removal of VC.

The other demands included election to VC panel and punishment to the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) cadres who confined the Shaheed Salam Barkat (SSB) Hall authorities on August 11.

Meanwhile, the stalemate in academic and administrative activities continued for the 18th consecutive day yesterday due to indefinite strike called by JUTA to press home their demands.
