More rickshaw ban from next month

The move to ban rickshaw on one of the six major roads in Dhaka this month has been put off for a month in view of Ramadan, Dhaka Transport Coordination Board (DTCB) sources said.

"If we make the road stretching from Science Laboratory to Bangabazar via Elephant Road, Shahbagh and the National Press Club off-limits to rickshaw during Ramadan, it might trigger a bad impact," a DTCB official said.

The step, aimed at lessening traffic congestion, will be implemented in December after the Eid celebrations, the officials said.

The DTCB in collaboration with Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Traffic and Dhaka City Corporation will implement the decision.

"After the ban on rickshaw, Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation will support us supplying buses and at the same time we will encourage private operators to run more vehicles on the road," a DTCB official said.

Rickshaws will be banned on the Gabtali-Azimpur route via New Market in January, he said.

Rickshaw moment on the road between Gabtali and Russell Square was banned on December 20 last year.

The DTCB official said the road from Pragati Sarani to Rampura to Mouchak would be banned for rickshaws in March and the stretches from Bangla Motor, New Eskaton, Malibagh to Rampura and Rokeya Sarani to Farmgate in December next year.

A drive is on since September 9 to seize unauthorised rickshaws from the city streets.
