Strike called at garment factories Nov 14

Angry workers yesterday called for a general strike at all garment factories on November 14 to protest the killing of a colleague in police firing at Narayanganj.Condemning the killing, different political, social and student organisations yesterday also demanded immediate arrest of the garment owners and police personnel responsible for the incident, formation of a probe committee and implementation of workers' demands. The Ganosanghati Andalon, Garment Workers Unity Forum, Bangladesh Garment Workers Unity Council, Bangladesh Trade Union Sangha, Bangladesh Chhatra Union, JSD-backed Bangladesh Chhatra League, Bangladesh Mohila Parishad, Bangladesh National Council (BNC) of Textile, Garment and Leather Workers and Garment Tailors Workers League in separate statements slated the police act. They also demanded compensation of Tk 5 lakh for families of the dead and Tk 1 lakh for the injured workers. The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) brought out a procession and held a rally in the city protesting the killing. The CPB leaders said the government showed its autocratic character by 'killing garment workers' instead of fulfilling their legitimate demands. Leaders of the Bangladesh Garments Workers Unity Council urged owners of garment industries to observe November 5 as condolence day by hoisting black flags. It also brought out a procession and held a rally at the Muktangon. The National Garment Workers Federation will hold a rally at the Muktangon today.
