No onion respite for commoners


Ordinary citizens continue to be dogged by the high price of essentials as well as uneven retail prices at different city markets yesterday.

Prices varied between Tk 2 to Tk 8 per kg for the same item at different markets.

Prices of onions and potatoes rose yesterday while prices of most other essentials including vegetables eased back from previous levels. Prices of soybean oil, pulses, mustard oil remained stable.

Prices of garlic eased marginally at different markets. Multi-clove garlic sold at Tk 30 per kg yesterday down from Tk 31 per kg the day before. Single-clove garlic sold at Tk 54 per kg at different retail markets as against Tk 45 per kg at Karwan Bazar.

Prices of locally grown onions shot up again at different markets yesterday. Per kg onion sold at Tk 30-32, up from Tk 26-27 the day before.

Indian onion sold at Tk 24-26 per kg, up from Tk 20-22.

Soybean oil prices remained unchanged at Tk 48-52 per litre.

Mustard oil prices soared to Tk 75 per litre yesterday from Tk 60-65 the day before.

Prices of sugar and salt remained the same as before. Sugar sold at Tk 32-33 per kg while salt at Tk 11-12.

Prices of some vegetables rose at different markets while most others remained stable. Tomato prices ranged between Tk 36 and Tk 40 per kg, while carrots sold between Tk 44 and 48 per kg.

Potatoes at Karwan Bazar kitchen market were selling at Tk 14 per kg up from Tk 11 per kg the day before.

Brinjals sold at Tk 30 per kg at different markets as against Tk 20 per kg at Karwan Bazar.

Prices of lady's finger remained unchanged at Tk 25-26 per kg and so did prices of pulses. Moshur pulses sold at Tk 42-43 per kg.

Moog prices ranged between Tk 38 and Tk 42 per kg. Per kg Khesari sold between Tk 20 and Tk 21 at Karwan Bazar and at Tk 24-25 elsewhere.

Chhola sold between Tk 30 and Tk 32 per kg at different markets yesterday but were cheaper at Karwan Bazar at Tk 26 per kg.

Najirshail rice sold at Tk 19-21 per kg and pasam at Tk 18-20. Flour prices remained unchanged at Tk 18 per kg while per kg wheat sold at Tk 14.

Beef, chicken, mutton prices remained more or less the same as before. Beef sold at Tk 90-100 per kg, a 700-750 gram chicken at Tk 80 while a 1kg chicken sold between Tk 90 and Tk 95. Mutton sold at Tk 140 per kg.
