15 launches fined in special drive

Fifteen passenger launches including one owned by a son of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and 35 cargo vessels have been fined mainly for faulty documents, over loading and lack of life saving equipment during a special drive started from October 26.

Eight launches were fined at the Sadarghat launch terminal and seven were at Naryanganj.

The Patuakhali-bound passenger launch Asha-Jawa was also detained for not having any valid survey certificate during the drive led by Special Magistrate Monir Chowdhury.

The passenger launch Coco-4, owned by prime minister's eldest son Tareque Rahman, was fined for carrying audible oil on the passenger deck. The magistrate fined and compelled the launch authorities to unload the cargo before setting out Sadarghat.
