Clubs' gracious gesture

The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) yesterday successfully convinced the leading clubs of Dhaka to release their players for the preparation of Bangladesh's FIFA World Cup 2006 qualifying fixtures against Tajikistan. Bangladesh's home match against the central-Asian nation is likely to be held in the last week of this month while the away game is billed for December 3. The BFF is presently running the national camp with 28 probables under coach Golam Sarwar Tipu. But there was a growing pressure from the five leading clubs on the BFF to release their respective players so that they could prepare for the Federation Cup. The clubs were reluctant to comply with the BFF's wish to release booters for a non-stop camp in fear of injuries to key players ahead of the domestic season. But after a meeting at the BFF office yesterday afternoon, managers and coaches of Mohammedan Sporting Club, Abahani, Muktijo-ddha Sangsad Krira Chakra, Aram-bagh Krira Sangha and Brothers Union gave in to Sarwar's argument. "I'm happy that the otherwise stubborn club officials are satisfied with my logic as to why they should attend the national camp. Actually I'm trying to gel a team instead of conducting rigorous training. It was big of the clubs to sacrifice their players for national interest," said the coach of the national team. BFF general secretary Anwarul Haq Helal also lauded the gesture of the clubs. "We were worried about the possible reaction of the clubs. But thankfully we could make them understand the importance releasing players for the national cause", said a beaming Helal after the fruitful meeting. Among the preliminary list of 28 booters in the national camp, Brothers have the highest eleven players followed by Muktijoddha with nine. Mohammedan and Abahani have three players each. Helal said that the national camp would run right up to the home leg. He also informed that they were thinking to cut seven days from the Federation Cup schedule for ensuring smooth training. "Since two top finishers from each group will play the semifinals, it is not necessary to hold a group championship deciding match. And by taking out those games in the final round of the Federation Cup, we can easily save six days," Helal added. But the BFF general secretary has another issue to settle. "After FIFA had ruled out any extension of its December 4 deadline to complete both the matches, we are now trying to work out a possible date with Tajikistan for our home match. We have proposed a date between November 20 to 23 but they don't want to play it before November 26 because of their Asia Cup commitments. So, we are now thinking of November 29 as the possible date," Helal explained.
