Operation under torchlight!

Believe it or not, torchlight is being used in surgical operation at a government hospital in Khulna.

This correspondent on Thursday found surgeon Dr Mohammod Akbar Hossain operating upon Jotsna Begum, 24, to remove a tumor from her ovary using torch light at the Paikgacha Modern Hospital at Paikgacha upazila headquarter. It was about 10-30 in the morning.

Door of the operation theatre was open and the patient's relatives were seeing from outside how the surgeon was doing the risky job.

Dr Akbar Hossain was assisted by Dr Prabhat Kumar Das.

The Paikgacha upazila health complex was upgraded to Paikgacha Modern Hospital in 1997.

When asked, RMO of the 41-bed hospital Dr Dilip Kumar Kundu said there was no power supply to the operation theatre for about a month.

"So, we have no alternative but to use torch light during surgical operation", Dr Kundu said.

But other sources said hospital authorities never made any serious effort to restore the power supply. But the RMO refuted the allegation and blamed the authorities concerned for not repairing the supply nine.

Meanwhile, condition of the patient is critical as her operated place was not stitched properly. She is wife of farmer Azizul Gazi of Godaipur village under Paikgacha upzila.
