Death of lawyer's assistant in clash
Nilphamari lawyers boycott courts

Lawyers in Nilphamari town yesterday began an indefinite court boycott protesting the death of a lawyer's assistant from injuries during a clash in the court compound on Saturday.

Tobarak Ali, injured along with six others during Saturday's clash died in the early hours of yesterday while he was being taken to Dhaka from Rangpur Medical College Hospital. The clash involved sections of lawyers, their assistants and Judge Court employees.

The clash created tension in the area and police have been deployed there.

Court sources claimed that three court employees --Saiful, Samsul and Molizar took Tk 20,000 from one Emdadul, promising bail for his brother Mizanur Rahman, accused in a case under the Woman and Children Repression Prevention Act.

As Mizanur did not get bail, Emdadul, accompanied by some others demanded return of the money.

As they came on Saturday, the three court employees took Emdadul to a room and beat them. This ensued the clash involving court employees, lawyers and their assistants.

The decision to boycott court was taken at a meeting of the district Bar Association.

On Sunday, the Bar Association in a resolution adopted at a meeting demanded action against the persons responsible for incidents.

The Bar Association has also filed a case against the administrative officer of the Judge Court and seven others accusing them of being involved in the clash.
