'2 UP chairmen,7 members killed in October'


Two union parishad (UP) chairmen and seven members were killed and nine others including two female members injured across the country during the last one month from October 1 to 31, says a survey of the Democracywatch.

The survey was based on the reports published in different national dailies.

According to the survey, Chairmen M Shahed Ali of Manikdah union and A Razzak Hawladar of Shirkhara union in Madaripur were killed by the extremists as sequel to previous enmity.

Members killed were Shariful Islam Swapan of Shahedol union in Kishoreganj, M Nasir of Guzra union in Chittagong, Fazlur Rahman of Notipota union in Chuadanga, Rezaul Karim of Sohonati union in Mymensingh, Toiub Ali and Mojibur Rahman of Harirampur union and Badshah Miah of Amin Bazar union in Dhaka.

The injured included three chairmen-- Soleman Goni of Nowdabash union in Lalmonirhat, Saidur Rahman of Bothlagari union in Nilphamari and M Mostafa Kamal of Rudia union in Thakurgaon.

Members injured were Dulal Miah and Dhiren Dutta of Nawdabash union in Lalmonirhat, Jamal Hossain of Elasha union in Patuakhali, Surat Ali of Etakhola union in Nilphamari, Ilias Miah of Bhober Char in Munshiganj,

Sonaban Banu of Baka union in Chuadanga and an unidentified member of Nawdabas union in Lalmonirhat.

Cases were filed against five chairmen and four members for corruption, rape and involvement in criminal attacks.

There were eight incidents of rape committed by the UP members during the period, the survey added.
