BNP MP laments police excesses on molasses traders

A lawmaker of the ruling alliance's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former minister expressed resentment in the Jatiya Sangsad yesterday at police excesses.Kabir, elected from Rajshahi, told the House that police intercepted a truck carrying molasses at Natore a few days back and unloaded the goods. On receiving the information, he immediately contacted the home minister and commerce secretary to know if there is a ban on traffic of food items. But he received no satisfactory reply. "Where shall I go? To whose notice shall I bring the sufferings of the farmers, who produce molasses in Rajshahi?" Kabir Hossain vented his frustration in a point of order. Kabir also criticised the commerce secretary, who asked him to file a written allegation. However, Speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar suggested him to give a notice to the parliament so that he (the speaker) could ask the minister concerned for a reply.
