Holy Ramadan

One month of fasting -- the holy Ramadan conveys the message of prayer, self- abstinence and, above all, equal treatment to all.

But Muslims in general do not seem to have a real grasp of these abstract principles upon which the teachings of Ramadan are based. Particularly, we notice during shopping that many people purchase expensive as well as exclusive apparels and shoes during the whole month keeping in mind the Eid-ul-fitr (the festival marking the end of Ramadan). Needless to say, such show of money power is not consistent with the teachings of the holy month.

As it is customary for every Muslim, even the poor, to wear new clothes and to give presents to near and dear ones, some people try to show their buying capacity in such a way that spoils the spirit and purpose of the festival. Cut-throat competition takes an ugly turn among the rich, as they go on purchasing valuable things undermining the value of the holy month itself.

Dishonest Businessmen take advantage of the situation and raise prices of different commodities. And people of limited means become the worst victims.

So the celebration of Eid becomes a highly materialistic and ostentatious pursuit having little to do with the self-abstinence that Muslims are supposed to practise during the month of Ramadan. Aren't we getting away from the teachings of religion?
