It's far from simple, Dr. Benkin

I read with interest Dr. Richard Benkin's write-up "Dear Bangladesh: An American Jew's perception". I agree that Bangladesh is a voice of moderation in the otherwise turbulent region, and is in a position to use its quiet diplomacy effectively to bring about peace, not only in the region but in other places, such as the Middle East.

However, the issue of recognising Israel as a country is far more complicated than the writer thinks. We have to consider our relations with the Arab world. There is a slight resentment among Arab countries regarding Bangladesh because it is not a conservative Muslim country like theirs. I don't think we really want to put that to test. After all, the Middle East not only employs many of our workers, it is also a major source of development aid.

Before we do something that might annoy the Middle Eastern countries, we should contemplate matters for a while. As I said before, quiet diplomacy characterises our foreign policy. I think this is the key to solving problems and ushering in peace.

No one listens when you shout things out as though you know everything. You have to work slowly and steadily to make people see things your way and understand you in such a way that they are finally able to trust you. Only then you actually have an impact on a given conflict. And yes, Bangladesh can do that, and as far as I know, has been doing that for a while now.

One caveat: when you are a moderator in conflict resolution, it is important to be neutral. Bangladesh, its government and people, has total support for Palestine, and yes, probably to the extent that we are biased. As such, Israel would never really trust us to provide unbiased solutions. Yes, recognising Israel may solve that problem.

But the problem will not be eliminated altogether . Moreover, Israel might see it as a strategic rather than sincere move on our part. I guess my letter won't add anything to the article, but I just thought I'd share my thoughts!
