Speaker rejects all opposition proposals for discussion
Staff Correspondent
Speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar yesterday rejected all opposition proposals for discussion on a raft of issues in parliament. Shajahan Khan and Panchanan Biswas of the Awami League and Golam Mohammad Quader and Mashiur Rahman Ranga of Jatiya Party (E) gave about 150 notices proposing general discussion on issues including the law and order, price hike of essentials and monga (famine-like situation) in the northern region. They observed that these should debated in the House. While disposing them of, the speaker said some notices lacked any specific issue, some had inconsistency, while others could be addressed under existing law. Meanwhile, the speaker accepted a notice submitted by ruling BNP lawmaker Abdul Gani yesterday and sent it to the standing committee of privileges for examination. In his notice, Gani alleged that columnist Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury undermined parliament and its lawmakers in a commentary published in a Bangla newspaper.
