American teenage soccer sensation Freddy Adu reportedly will become the youngest athlete to play professional sports in the United States in more than a century. The Washington Post reported Tuesday that the 14-year-old Adu has signed a six-year contract with D.C. United of Major League Soccer and will play for the team next season. The team would not confirm the signing, but the newspaper reported it will be announced Wednesday in New York, where the MLS is based. Adu, whose family migrated to the United States from Ghana in 1997, has been compared to soccer legend Pele despite his young age. Earlier this year, he signed a one million dollar endorsement deal with Nike. Adu turns 15 in June, two months after the MLS season begins. Pitcher Fred Chapman was 14 years and seven months old when he made his major league debut in 1887. Adu has worked out with D.C. United in recent years and is expected to join the team on a full-time basis after he graduates from high school in May. Abu trains in Bradenton, Florida with the United States Under-17 team and starred for that team in August in the Under-17 world championships.
