BB circulates new notes

Bangladesh Bank (BB) has circulated new notes of various denominations to the tune of Tk 566 crore to meet the huge demand for new notes ahead of Eid.

People have been crowding the BB's exchange counter for the last couple of days to replace torn and soiled notes with fresh ones. Tk 10 and Tk 2 denominations were in high demand.

New notes amounting to Tk 150 crore were circulated from the BB's Motijheel office yesterday alone.

The Motijheel office also exchanged bills worth Tk 276 crore on Saturday and Tk 140 crore on Thursday.

The central bank will print 1,155 million new notes by June, 2004 to help people replace torn and soiled notes. BB sources said the central bank has already printed 800 million new notes and 400 million have been released through commercial banks. The central bank distributed the rest.
